My first paid job was working as a barman in Maghull Town Hall when I was in sixth form. It played havoc with my body clock. How did you get into the building industry? My first job after uni was as a trainee land surveyor, driving all over the country doing topographical and measured building surveys for developers. What project are you currently working on? Amongst many in the pre-Christmas rush I’m working on a large nine-storey student accommodation block in the city I live in, Sheffield. It’s aiming for a 19% reduction in CO2 emissions beyond national standards. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Trust your gut feeling. Coffee or tea? Tea, preferably from a teapot ( I like coffee too but coffee doesn’t like me). Proudest achievement to date? Learning to play piano in my thirties. How do you like to unwind? A walk in the peak district followed by a fireside pint in a cosy pub. What would you say to young people entering the industry? Do your research so you can be confident in your work. If you ruled the world for a day… Everyone go outside for a day of fresh air, daylight and nature, and pick up as much plastic as they can. What’s the best thing about working at Base? Without question the team, a friendly office environment makes all the difference in a job.
